How can counselling help?
People often say to me "talking about it, isn't going to change it is it?" No, it isn't. But somehow the process of talking and listening in confidence without being judged, can help us to see things differently and therefore, feel differently.
Counselling gives you the opportunity to share, discuss and explore your worries thus helping you feel better about your struggles whether your issue is relatively new, or if you have lived with it for as long as you can remember. What can I help with? I have found counselling can make a real difference to anxiety, depression, panic disorders including people who have spent most of their lives "a born worrier". Counselling can also successfully help people with PTSD and other trauma-related difficulties. Most people have also found counselling beneficial for those life events which can be enormously challenging to our wellbeing such as bereavement, relationship struggles, work-related concerns, sleeplessness, stress, feeling angry for no obvious reason or a life-affecting illness. Other areas that counselling can help with are self-esteem, low confidence, spirituality or a growing sense of feeing lost and low in general. I also have a strong interest in Wellbeing and the impact our lifestyle has on our mood. To this end, if you are happy to do so, I spend some time exploring your nutrition, sleep pattern, leisure & interests, relationships and other areas which are proven to impact on our emotional health in a positive and lasting way. What's great about this, is it means we can do a lot to help ourselves and often, with just small changes Who do I work with? I work with the following: Young people Adults Older adults Groups Organisations Occupational Health Employee Assistance Programme |
What to expect
|
I use the initial session to assess the nature of your difficulties and to explore what you would like to get from the sessions. In other words how counselling can help you. We also talk a little about what approaches to use in the sessions, how long you might need to come for and how often, and then we look at when to book our next session. It is also your opportunity to ask any questions you may have. Each session lasts up to an hour and where possible, it is usually helpful to begin working together within a fortnight of our initial meeting. As a guide, I suggest six sessions which we can add to or reduce according to how you feel you are doing. I review this with you on a regular basis to ensure your needs are still being met. The frequency is usually weekly or fortnightly to begin with, depending upon what you feel you need and your lifestyle responsibities e.g. work commitments, childcare arrangements etc. The cost is £45 per session for individuals. Payment is required at the beginning of each session, either by cash or bacs transfer. Cheque may be possible by arrangement. For organisations or groups, please make enquires regarding costs: [email protected] Basically, counselling ends when we both get a sense that you are feeling better about whatever it was that brought you to therapy in the first place. I have found it usually works best for us both to discuss this together, rather than just end abruptly.
I will also take time to ensure you feel you have gained the right "tools" from our sessions so that you can finish counselling feeling more equipped and able to cope. I cannot change your life for you, but I wholeheartedly believe that counselling can help you address your problems in such a way that your well-being improves and you feel happier, healthier and more restored. |
